This 1/48 plastic kit reproduces the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden, known to Allied pilots as Jack. Tamiya has focused on precise panel lines and proportion to reflect the aircrafts role as a high altitude interceptor, giving modellers a clear starting point for a realistic finish.
Conceived in 1939, the Raiden was Mitsubishi's answer to the need for an aircraft optimized to intercept enemy bombers over land. Designers wrestled with engine choices and reliability concerns, opting for the larger air-cooled Kasei engine because it offered dependable operation despite its bulk.
To offset the engine size, engineers fitted a longer propeller shaft and slimmed the cowling, plus a forced-cooling fan to help airflow. The resulting fuselage had a tapered, spindle-like shape and incorporated Fowler flaps to aid turn and landing performance.
Once early vibration and cockpit visibility problems were addressed, the Raiden entered effective service, with units such as the 302nd Air Group operating from Atsugi. The type proved valuable in homeland defence and achieved a number of interceptions late in the conflict, though its impact varied in earlier operations like the Battle of Mariana.
